Subject: VS: ANM9 - Info on AIS as an AtoN

Dear Mahesh

I hope you had a happy Easter holliday?

Here are the results from the Danish jury.

Looking forward to see you in Edinburgh.

Regards

Michael

1. How many buoys and beacons are fitted with "traditional" monitoring system in your country/admin?

RDANH has 15 beacons fitted with a traditional Remote Control and Monitoring System. Presently no Buoys are remotely monitored.

2. What type/types of monitoring is it (ex.VHF,GSM etc)?

All RDANH Remote Monitoring and Control is presently done through Cellular Network (GSM), utilizing the Short Message System (SMS) functionality of the Cellular Network.

3. Are you planning to transmit their position info of them via base station(s)?If yes what number/percentage?

RDANH has at present no plans for transmitting position info on Remotely Monitored AtoNs via AIS base stations.

4. What percentage of all AtoN in your country do you think should be seen on ECDIS as fitted with AIS?

RDANH has not yet developed a firm policy as to how many AtoN shall be fitted with AIS, however the present estimate is that no more than 5-10% will be fitted with AIS.

5. How many AtoN are fitted with AIS transponders in your country/admin?

RDANH has not yet fitted any AtoN with AIS. A workbench trial was initiated in 2006, and field trials are planned for 2007 now that IALA Recommendation A-126 and IEC 62320-2 have been developed.

6. In what situations do you think virtual AIS should be used?-should be any restrictions/limitations?

RDANH has used virtual AIS in cases where sudden hazardous situations have occurred. Virtual AtoN transmissions as well as addressed binary AIS transmissions have thus been used by RDANH to advice AIS fitted ships of the hazard until it was possible to establish physical marking. Once the physical AtoN were in place the AIS transmissions were discontinued.

It is the view of RDANH that virtual AtoN should only be used as a supplementary emergency measure until the percentage of the world fleet with good AIS displays (ECDIS) has increased considerably. Replacing physical AtoN with Virtual AtoN should only be considered when practically all ships are fitted with good AIS displays, ensuring high probability of detecting the virtual AtoN. It shall be noted, that RDANH has successfully carried out a trial with virtual AIS on a sunken submarine in the North Sea including an area around the sunken submarine where only ships entering this area got the information. Afterwards (when the weather allowed us) the submarine were properly marked in accordance with IALA MBSJ.

Dear Mahesh,

As a task leader I would like to ask few questions to committee members about progress on AIS AtoN in their countries/administrations.

Could you pass it to them?

Thank you
